EXAMPLES
Simplify the following ratios
1) 14 : 49
Simplify means bring it to its lowest term
14: 49 = 2:7
Each divided by 7
2) 10 : 15 = ( ) : 3
Look for the relation between 15 and (second numbers of the two ratios)
Notice that 15/5 = 3 . Therefore divide 10 by five to get 2
10: 15 = (2) : 3
3) 1m : 40cm
Both ratios need to have the same value.
Change 1m to 100cm
100cm : 40cm
Simplify to its lowest term
5: 2
Each divided by 20
4) James ruler is 7 times longer than Jones ruler
a) Write the ratio of the length of James ruler to that of Jones ruler
b) The length of Jones ruler to James ruler
1) 14 : 49
Simplify means bring it to its lowest term

100cm : 40cm
Simplify to its lowest term
5: 2
